Union Station/Museum District

The 1911 copper-domed Union Station, restored in 1993, is the center of Tacoma’s latest renaissance and home to a breathtaking display of glass art by Tacoma-born Dale Chihuly. Next door the innovative Washington State History Museum takes visitors through life in Washington, as settlers would have seen it.

The Museum of Glass

The Museum of Glass, featuring a tilted, 90-foot-tall cone wrapped in stainless steel, showcases contemporary art and glass from around the world. This state-of-the-art museum also includes an operational glassblowing studio where artists in residence describe the process behind their creations. The Chihuly Bridge of Glass links the Washington State History Museum with the Museum of Glass and creates a magnificent gateway into downtown Tacoma.

The Tacoma Art Museum

The Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) is an architectural wonder contrasting the surrounding industrial landscape with Mt. Rainier. The museum’s permanent collection is one of the premiere collections of Northwest artists’ work and includes the consummate public collection of Dale Chihuly’s work on permanent display.

Broadway Center for the Performing Arts

Tacoma's Broadway Center for the Performing Arts is located in the downtown Theater District. With three unique theaters and their own acclaimed performance series, The Broadway Center serves as a vital and valuable arts steward. The Pantages, a historic 1,186-seat theater modeled after the palace at Versailles, hosts the Tacoma Symphony, Tacoma City Ballet, Tacoma Concert Band, Tacoma Performing Dance Company and Tacoma Opera. A block away, the 742-seat Rialto Theater is home to the Tacoma Youth Symphony and the Northwest Sinfonietta chamber orchestra. Theatre on the Square, a 302-seat facility with a contemporary flair, is home to the region's only professional theater company and offers a more intimate setting.

A Community of Arts

During any given week, you can choose from Broadway plays, baroque concerti, dance exhibitions and vocal ensembles—and that’s just at the region’s major arts facilities. Duck into a coffeehouse, bookstore or high school auditorium, and there’s a good chance you’ll be treated to a poetry slam, folk performance or cello solo.

The music departments at Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Puget Sound treat music lovers to organ recitals and jazz concerts. Community chorales and gospel choirs are the hallmark of regional holiday celebrations, and residents always have a contingent at the city’s annual Wintergrass Bluegrass Festival.

The Grand Cinema

In addition to live performances, you also have the opportunity to view independent, foreign and art films at the Grand Cinema, a nonprofit venue located inside Tacoma’s Merlino Art Center only a few blocks from the hospital.

The Tacoma Dome

One of the world’s largest wood domes in the world, the Tacoma Dome is home to numerous events ranging from state high school basketball and wrestling tournaments to concerts by internationally famous musical groups. Parking is plentiful. Or take the Tacoma Light Rail link from downtown.
