The primary goal of the TFM residency program is to train Family Physicians
to be highly skilled, personally and professionally balanced, and
fundamentally sound in the principles of their profession. To
accomplish this goal, Tacoma Family Medicine strives to:
- Deliver a high quality broad-based educational experience in
Family Medicine which serves to help residents gain the knowledge,
skills and personal attitudes required to provide evidence-based care
for a wide variety of acute and chronic diseases.
- Train for the entire range of competencies needed to meet "the full
basket of services" as defined in the Future of Family Medicine Project.
- Teach responsible provision of longitudinal, comprehensive health
care for all members of the family. This includes the ability to be
sensitive to the special individual needs of patients, to provide
leadership, to coordinate all aspects of the health care team, to
ensure proper and timely use of consultants from other specialties and
to gain proficiencies in caring for patients at home, in extended care
facilities, in clinics and hospitals.
- Fulfill the needs of medically underserved communities in the State
of Washington and in the Pacific Northwest. TFM strives to facilitate
the transition from resident trainee to a capable community-based
practitioner. This is accomplished through a structured teaching
program in practice management and through career development programs
designed to meet the unique and personal needs of each resident.
- Foster personal responsibility toward the health and well being of
each resident and their family. We strive to promote self-awareness and
insight into the relationships between personal and professional life
that are important for a satisfying life path and long career in family
medicine.
- Create a curriculum that will provide individuals with the
cognitive and procedural skills in family medicine necessary to provide
care in any practice environment.
